    Shell casings and projectiles recovered at the scene of crime by scene of crime technicians are forwarded to the Firearms Identification Service of the Forensic Science Institute within the framework of a standard reporting procedure.

  • Gun­shot residue

    Every shot from a firearm releases a cloud of microscopic particles which deposits in the surrounding environment – on both the shooter and the target as well.

  • Sali­va residues

    Trace materials such as blood, saliva, sperm, hair and epithelial skin particles suitable for molecular-genetic analysis are recovered at many crime scenes, other locations related to a crime and from individuals involved in the crime.

  • Plant and soil traces

    A transfer of animal and plant traces such as leaf fragments, seeds, animal hair, remains of insects or feathers can not be avoided, depending on the course of the crime.

  • Fi­bres

    Microscopic traces of textile materials often play an important role in the solution of homicide cases. Single-fibre fragments often appear as classical contact traces, especially in crimes against persons such as robbery, assault, rape and murder.

  • Fin­ger­prints

    Even in the age of DNA analysis, fingerprints are still the most important and unique types of contact trace evidence. The KTI maintains the only service in Germany concerned with purely scientific research, development and testing of fingerprint detection methods.
