The Forensic Science Institute is one of nine specialised divisions within the BKA. The organisational structure is formed by five specialised groups made up of 22 specialist areas in total:
- Physics, Chemistry
- Firearms, Material Science
- Biology
- Documents, Media Technology
- Writing, Linguistics, Speaker Identification, Information Technology
With staff of about 325 from approximately 60 different vocational fields, the KTI has a unique breadth of expertise amongst scientific institutes.
