At the end of 2003, the Bundeskriminalamt took initial steps towards setting up the Terrorism / Extremism Research Unit. The Terrorism / Extremism Research Unit concentrates its research effort on the phenomenon "Extremism / Terrorism".
The central, fundamental task of the Terrorism / Extremism Research Unit is to collate sophisticated knowledge on the phenomenon "Extremism /Terrorism" and to augment this through its own research activities. This general, constitutive task assignment is also in accordance with the legal mandate as laid down by section 2 (6) of the BKA Law.
Even if this research unit is still being set up, one thing is certain: the Terrorism / Extremism Research Unit touches on an enormously challenging and exciting research area which, in respect of its characteristics, will be outlined in general here.
